Considering the group released material on Elektra, Capitol, White Whale, Anthem, Poppy, and Flying Fish, it`s a wonder that Best of the Dillards 1963-79: Let the Music Flow is available at all, and with over 78 minutes of music, it`s the definitive career overview from this influential, yet often over-looked, electric bluegrass collective -- the band`s only other compilation, 1991`s There Is a Time (1963-70) focused exclusively on their first five (and arguably best) records for Elektra. While they never found the success of contemporaries like the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, the Flying Burrito Brothers or the Byrds, the Dillards helped modernize the old-timey sounds of the South, drawing from rock, folk, and country without sounding contrived, earning the respect of both critics and musicians alike -- 1968`s Wheatstraw Suite and 1970`s Copperfields are progressive bluegrass classics. The Dillards - Best of the Darlin` Boys $8.98 Vanguard`s The Best of the Darlin` Boys is a misleading collection of nine studio tracks culled from the Dillards` last two studio albums, Let It Fly (1991) and Take Me Along for the Ride (1992). While the Rodney Dillard-led country-rock of the era wasn`t dreadful (Let It Fly was one of the group`s stronger overall releases), the compilers chose to slap a photo of the fictional Darlin` Boys (who were portrayed by the Dillards on The Andy Griffith Show) on the front cover, rendering this package -- which features none of the vintage bluegrass that the picture implies -- into pure, unfiltered snake oil. ~ James Christopher Monger Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. The Dillards - Wheatstraw Suite $13.28 It never got any better than this. In 1968, as the Byrds were making valiant (if unappreciated) efforts to bring rock and country music closer together, the Dillards were trying to do some of the same for bluegrass and rock. The result was 13 all-but-perfect tracks mixing some pretty laid-back topicality ("Hey Boys") and humor ("The Biggest Whatever"), cowboy songs ("Single Saddle," which Gene Autry should have covered), just plain gorgeous poetry ("Lemon Chimes"), and a couple of unexpected covers ("I`ve Just Seen a Face," "Reason to Believe"), with arrangements that exude a delicate, subdued lushness ("Listen to the Sound") and an element of electric rock (courtesy of Joe Osborn on electric bass and Jim Gordon on drums) that worked perfectly. In many ways, this is a finer rural/rock fusion album than Sweetheart of the Rodeo, the first Flying Burrito Brothers album, or the Beau Brummels` efforts during this same period, and an indispensable part of any collection of `60s music. ~ Bruce Eder Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
